Fuseproject partnered with L’Oreal on UV Sense – the first battery-free wearable sensor, that tracks your UV exposure.
Challenge
Our team was tasked with designing a wearable that would seamlessly blend into daily life, yet remain visible in sunlight. We partnered with L’Oreal’s engineering team to understand the technology’s capabilities and shape the wearable direction. We tested numerous clips, pendants, and other accessories, and decided to explore UV Sense in nail art form as well. As a nail accessory, we realized UV Sense could feel comfortable, and look beautiful 24/7.
My Role
I was the main visual designer, developing a wide selection of graphics for UV Sense. Drawing inspiration from nail art and current manicure trends, I created hundreds of different designs. We tested the designs, learning that certain designs worked better than others on a convex shape.
We presented 50 designs to L’Oreal (5 collections of 10). After further refinements and a decision to launch with the La Roche-Posay brand, our client pursued a design in the La Roche-Posay colorway for the initial launch.
I also designed the packaging of UV Sense, which celebrates the slim, subtle form of the sensors. The packaging fluidly unfolds to reveal the sensor floating in its place, a representation of how technology can discreetly and seamlessly live on our bodies. Each package is enhanced with bold, dynamic graphics that reflect the pattern of the wearable inside, while pulling from modern fashion cues.
Outcome
In January 2018, L’Oreal presented UV Sense at CES and received a number of awards in the Health and Wearable categories. L’Oreal officially launched the product later that year under the name “My UV Track“, along with an accompanying app to track UV exposure. My UV Track is exclusively sold in Apple Stores.
